Google CEO Says About Specificity of AI as Cybersecurity Tool

AI is perceived ambiguously by the public and the expert environment. Many perceive artificial intelligence as the driving force of economic and technological progress, which transforms the current configuration of the existence of human civilization, creating a more comfortable and developed territory from the space of being. At the same time, alarmist opinions about AI are circulating on a noticeable scale in the sphere of public discourse. In this case, it implies the perception of artificial intelligence as a kind of source of destructive power that will destroy the world. Most likely, over time, the truth will turn out to be in the middle and the future will not become a space for the implementation of a disaster scenario. Such ways of development have often occurred in history regarding something new and not fully studied. At the same time, the problem of cybersecurity against the background of the active scaling of advanced technologies is relevant and extends to new dimensions and levels of complexity.

Sundar Pichai, at the end of last week, during a speech to delegates of the Munich Security Conference, said that concern about the impact of AI on security in the virtual space is justified. At the same time, he noted that, in his opinion, artificial intelligence still strengthens protection in the cybersecurity area.

Attacks in the digital dimension are becoming more sophisticated, which is facilitated by the development of technologies that fraudsters have access to. In this case, it is useful for users to know the algorithms of cybercriminals. For example, on the Internet search platform, anyone can get information on the query how to know if my camera is hacked. It is better to spend time reading materials about the schemes of cybercriminals than to lose money or control over personal data.

Experts at Cybersecurity Ventures, a research company, have estimated that in 2023, cyber attacks cost the global economy about $8 trillion. According to them, by 2025 the corresponding figure will increase to $10.5 trillion.

The British National Cyber Security Center, part of GCHQ, the country’s intelligence agency, published a report in January noting that AI will increase the threat of attacks in virtual space, reducing barriers to hacker entry.

Sundar Pichai stated that artificial intelligence disproportionately helps the people defending. In this context, he noted that AI is a tool for large-scale impact. In this case, disproportionality means that the defense is ahead of the attacking side.

Sundar Pichai also says that artificial intelligence reduces the time needed to detect cyber attacks and respond to these illegal actions. He is convinced that AI will reduce the so-called defenders’ dilemma, according to which hackers should succeed only once, and the defense side should demonstrate a positive result every time.
