Amazon’s “One” palm scanner payment technology will launch at over 65 Whole Foods stores in California. Thus, stores in Malibu, Montana Avenue, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Orange County, Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Santa Cruz will soon modernize their retail shopping with the contactless biometric payment solution.

Immediately after its rollout in 2020, Amazon One was available only in Amazon Go stores. Eventually, it expanded to Whole Foods stores in Austin, Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York City. Today, customers can also check out with their palms at the Amazon Style fashion store in Glendale, California, along with select Fresh and Go stores.

The innovative payment tech works simply. First, users visit a kiosk or a POS station at participating locations to link their palm and payment card to the service. After that, all they have to do during the checkout process is hover their hand over a scanner to complete the transaction.

Amazon One technology creates unique palm signatures using machine learning to identify customers. Although the kiosk takes a picture of a user’s palm, the company claims it doesn’t store it. Instead, Amazon encrypts the image and sends it to a server for matching.
