UBS and Microsoft announced a landmark expansion of their partnership to accelerate UBS’s transition to cloud services.?

In 2018, the two companies agreed on a plan to move one-third of UBS’s applications to the public cloud within four years. Within an updated initiative, the Swiss financial provider will have more than 50% of its applications, including critical workloads, running on Microsoft Azure by 2027.?

Moreover, now the partnership includes the co-development of innovations and greater collaboration in areas like carbon reduction. Microsoft Azure remains UBS’s primary cloud platform, helping to promote its “cloud-first” strategy and the modernization of UBS’s global technology estate.

Achieving the previous goal of transferring 30% of applications to the cloud allowed UBS to slash the energy consumption of its workloads by up to 30%.

Besides, the partners co-developed an open-source Carbon Aware API. It provides recommendations on scheduling workloads that require heavy computing power during times when clean, renewable or low-carbon sources of electricity are most available. This solution can be shared with large and small companies around the world via Green Software Foundation.
