E-commerce in Germany was worth €83.3 billion in 2020, according to Ecommerce News. This is an increase of 14.6% compared to the situation one year before.

This significant increase in gross sales of goods in German e-commerce has everything to do with the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting lockdowns.

The new numbers come from the e-commerce association Bevh, who also explains that last year, about 1 in 8 euros of household expenditure on goods were spent online. And even though grocery stores, drugstores, and pharmacies remained open in Germany, goods such as groceries and pharmaceutical products still recorded the strongest growth in online retail.

Another interesting finding is that almost 1 in 3 online buyers in 2020 were older than 60 years. A year ago, this age group accounted for less than a quarter of e-commerce sales in the country. For now, 4 out of 10 online customers order more than once a week.

We’ve reported that the cross-border e-commerce sales from the United Kingdom are up 57% in 2020 over the same period last year.
