Cross-border QR remittances have been enabled between Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

This has been enabled by the central banks of Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. QR remittances are instant and convenient payments that people can use with their mobile phones. Through the linkage, people travelling from Malaysia to Indonesia or Thailand will make secure and safe payments by tapping into their e-wallet mobile app or their bank. The move makes the three nations among the initial ASEAN countries to implement QR alternative payment methods (AMPs).

The remittance linkage will be made via different digital wallets and banks. Some of these include Bank Permata, DANA, Bank Central Asia, LinkAja, Bank Indonesia and ShopeePay.

More cross-border travellers are expected within Asia in the third year of the coronavirus pandemic. As such, there is a projected increase in the adoption of e-payments by online remittance avenues and central banks across the three regions more so with the competitive cross-border exchange rates for purchases.
