The number of stores that enable customers to self-scan their purchases on their own mobile devices or merchant devices reached a total of 46,000 in 2021, but it’s going to rise threefold globally by 2027, according to Retail Banking Research (RBR).

“Mobile self-scanning solutions have been offered by large, established retailers in European countries such as the UK, France and the Netherlands for many years. However, major chains in other parts of the world, such as in the USA, as well as smaller merchants elsewhere, are increasingly offering the service via smartphone applications.”
RBR

In 2021, 10,000 additional stores offered mobile self-scanning solutions. For instance, convenience chain 7-Eleven rolled out smartphone self-scanning to almost 3,000 US stores, whereas Spanish fuel retailer Repsol introduced self-scanning at 600 outlets.

Therefore, the report predicts the technology will be increasingly deployed in various sectors, including fuel, DIY, homeware and apparel retail. Mobile self-scanning is already common for many grocery stores across the globe.?

Although many retailers develop their own software for mobile self-scanning, a large number works with third party specialists. The market for self-scanning via retailer-provided devices continues to grow, with US-based Zebra accounting for more than 80% of hardware installations.?

Besides, greater adoption of smartphone self-scanning applications, particularly in the Americas and Asia, will give the market a huge boost? in the near future.?
