Canada’s grocery chain Sobeys with more than 1,500 stores says?it has found the way out of getting rid of the long queues by piloting the Caper Smart Carts. The algorithm of its functioning is simple: the technology scans and weighs products after customers place them in the cart displays a running tally of purchases while the customer shops, and allows customers to pay on the spot with the cart.

What is more, the cart’s easy-to-read screen will help customers navigate the shop, highlight promotions, and make product suggestions to round out a recipe. Customers will also be able to weight their products right into the carts without entering any barcodes. Furthermore, multiple high-resolution cameras that capture 120 images per second identify a product no matter how it’s placed in the cart.

This is a unique way for us to test innovative new technologies aimed at enhancing the customer shopping experience and learn how best to make it faster and easier. The carts will also give our in-store teammates more time to interact with customers and answer questions about food and new productsrn
Mathieu Lacoursiere, Vice President, Retail Support at Sobeys Inc.

52% of the Canadians surveyed feel their current in-store shopping experience would significantly improve if they were able to quickly and conveniently navigate the store.
