Grubhub and Amazon Open Autonomous Store on Campus

Grubhub Campus?announced that Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology was?available at the manless convenience store at Loyola University Maryland. It has become the first Grubhub partner campus to deploy the technology.

Just Walk Out contactless technology lets consumers enter a store, grab what they want, and leave without stopping at the checkout. Amazon leverages computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning to create a seamless shopping experience. The same technology is employed at its proprietary Amazon Go manless stores.

The peculiarity of applying Just Walk Out solution on campus is that next to the traditional payment methods, students can choose their university meal plan to cover the chosen food.

To enter the store, one must scan a QR code from Grubhub’s app. The students may pick whatever items they want and leave. Charges will automatically apply to the selected payment method. Besides, they can place orders for pickup at campus eateries or use the app to order from off-campus with no delivery fees.

Contactless stores of this type are becoming more popular across campuses. They eliminate queues typical for university and school eateries and save students precious recess time.

Amazon has previously opened campus c-stores at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, the University of Dayton and the University of Pittsburgh. However, Loyola University is the first location where Amazon tech is integrated with Grubhub.

The announcement states that about 300 higher education institutions use Grubhub Campus for ordering and payments. Campus dining on Grubhub is a mobile food ordering platform for on-campus restaurants. It enhances the ordinary dining experience as students may order ahead and pay with their campus cards, as well as debit or credit cards.
